Component 1 - Performing
Option A - Total duration of performances: 10-12 minutes 35% of qualification
Non-exam assessment: externally assessed by a visiting examiner. A performance consisting of a minimum of three pieces either as a soloist or as part of an ensemble.
Option B - Total duration of performances: 6-8 minutes 25% of qualification
Non-exam assessment: externally assessed by a visiting examiner. A performance consisting of a minimum of two pieces either as a soloist or as part of an ensemble.
Component 2 - Composing
Option A - Total duration of compositions: 4-6 minutes: 25% of qualification
Two Compositions – One to a set brief and one reflecting an Area of study
Option B – Total duration of compositions 8 – 10 minutes 35% of qualification
Component 3 - Appraising
40% of qualification
2 hour 15 minute listening and appraising exam consisting of questions on
The Symphony and two other areas of study
Music A Level can lead on to further study at a university or specialist conservatoire and on to a wide range of professional occupations including performance, composition, arts administration, librarianship, teaching and music therapy. Music A Level is also a highly regarded supporting subject for further study in other academic and scientific disciplines.
Students should have achieved at least a B grade at GCSE and should have the ability to read music notation.
