You are warmly invited to our annual Open Evening (for current Year 6 pupils going into Year 7 in September 2020).
Our Head of School, Mrs Cochrane, will deliver a welcome talk at 6:30pm and repeated at 7:15pm. Following each welcome talk, children and parents/carers will also be able to take a tour of the school to see some of the staff and pupils who will be showcasing all that our school has to offer. The school site will be open between 6:15pm and 9:00pm. Parking is available on site with additional parking in the main village car park.

We are an outstanding school where students make exceptional progress and are well prepared for the next stage of their lives.
Open Week - Monday 21st to Friday 25th October
In addition to the Open Evening, we provide the opportunity for guided tours during the school day in the week of Open Evening. Places are limited to three per family and by prior arrangement only. If you would like to book one of these tours, please contact main reception on 01283 247800.
Early Closure for Open Evening – Thursday 24th October. School will close at 1.10 pm
Friday 25th October is a normal school day.
The half term break is Monday, 28th October – Friday 1st November.
We are holding our Open Evening for parents of Year 6 children on Thursday 24th October – 6.30 pm-9.00 pm.
The school will close at 1.10 pm in order to provide time for staff to prepare rooms, displays and experiments. Bus companies have been notified and buses will be departing from school shortly after 1.10pm. At the end of lesson 4 all pupils catching buses should go straight to the bus queues.
Pupils receiving free school meals may, if they wish, get their food from the canteen, at morning break. A reminder will be in the daily pupil bulletin.
If your son or daughter has volunteered to help out on this evening, please ensure she/he has returned the appropriate permission slip (supplied by the teacher) and turns up in full school uniform. They should check with the teacher they are helping what times they are needed for.
You may find it useful to check the school website regularly for details of special events and consultations www.jths.co.uk
If your child travels by school bus, please read the letter below regarding recent difficulties, mainly due to bad weather.
The Youth Emotional Support Services are holding an open day, at their office in Uttoxeter, for World Mental Health Day on the 10th October 2019, 1-6pm. This event is open to everyone who would like to learn more about mental health and what the Service can offer for those who are struggling.
Illness - If you wish to report an absence due to illness, please ring the dedicated absence line on 01283 890772.
Planned Absence - If you wish to inform us of a known absence, please complete the Sixth Form Planned Absence Form which can be found on our website www.jths.co.uk
May we please remind parents that all year 12 students will be attending the UK University / Apprenticeship Search Fair this Friday, 4th October, at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
Payment for the coach of £8.00 was due last week. If it has not yet been paid then please do this. We can take cash at Reception if required. Students have been sent a link by email to register and download their ticket which must be done in advance of the day. The trip will depart at 8:30am (we would ask students to be on site before this) and will return to school by 3:30pm. Please refer to the letter for further details.
Year 11 Tutors have been supporting and advising students about their Post 16 options. As part of this programme, all students will have the opportunity to login to a careers platform called Unifrog. This web based resource will be crucial when making important decisions about the future. It enables students to search the extensive careers library to explore future careers further. We recognise that as parents you will want to support your son/daughter in making their Post 16 choices, therefore, a PowerPoint presentation has been included below to introduce you to Unifrog and to explain how you can also login to explore the extensive resources. Slide 10 will show you how to login with the form code johntaylorparents.

There are still a few places left on next year's PGL weekend trip to Boreatton Park.
For those of you unfamiliar with PGL, please visit their website for a wealth of information on the centre: https://www.pgl.co.uk/en-gb/school-trips/secondary-schools/centres/boreatton-park .
View the letter below for further details and cost.
PE KIT: Students who cannot take part in PE need a written and signed note from a parent or guardian to excuse them. They will still be expected to change into their kit and will receive a PE strike if they do not bring this. If at any point a student forgets kit for PE and can change, they will be expected to borrow kit and will still receive a PE strike.
If they have a serious injury and they physically cannot change because of a cast/support for example, this should be detailed in the letter from home and therefore no PE kit strike will be issued.
Thank you. PE DEPARTMENT
All year 7 students need to be in school at the normal time - we shall be leaving by coach at 9:00am to Whitemoor Lakes and returning for the end of the school day. Students will need to bring a packed lunch and drinks. Students who are eligible for free school meals will be provided with a packed lunch. We shall be participating in the activities regardless of the weather therefore it is essential that all pupils have:
- Old warm clothing
- Long sleeved top
- Waterproof jacket/sunhat/suncream/hat/gloves (as appropriate)
- Sturdy footwear eg a pair of trainers that can get dirty
A further reminder that this trip is compulsory for all Y7 students. Many thanks to those parents who have already paid via ParentPay. Would those who haven’t yet paid the £15 contribution towards the trip, please do so via ParentPay.
Should you have any questions please contact Miss Bale.
We are really pleased with how many Y7 students have engaged with Accelerated Reader and have been keen to quiz on books they've finished reading. We already have our first Word Millionaire for this academic year!
Students can now quiz for longer during the week, from 7 am until 9 pm and at weekends too. Students should access Accelerated Reader from home via the School Website, under the Learning tab and then LRC. Please encourage your child to quiz on any books they have read, whether they are books from home, from the LRC or the public library. Happy reading and thank you for your support with this invaluable scheme. Mrs Collier - LRC Manager.
