Resources for summer learning

  • Overview of these resources
  • Year 7 Optional Summer Work Booklet
  • Year 8 Optional Summer Work Booklet
  • Year 9 Summer Work Booklet - English, Maths & Science
  • Year 9 Summer Work Booklet - GCSE Options subjects
  • Year 10 Summer Work
  • Year 11 into 12 - Induction & Bridging work
  • Year 12 into 13 - Summer work

Overview of these resources

We have had a number of requests for suggestions of work that students can complete over the summer in order to help them prepare for the new academic year. As a school we should be clear that over the past few months we have continually set home learning which links directly to our regular programmes of study for all subjects. If students have been completing these tasks to the best of their ability, they should not be concerned about falling behind. We will be planning a suitable curriculum on return to take in to account the nature of their learning over the past months.

Many subjects set 'bridging' tasks across the summer break every year. These are designed to support students in their transition into examination subjects or simply when moving 'up' a year group. This year, we have also looked to signpost parents and students to other possible resources that may support in this summer work; this is in light of the current situation and in response to requests received.

It will be a particularly good idea to complete the bridging tasks as you move into examination courses or indeed into the final year of such a course. You may also choose to access the extra learning that has been signposted.

If you are in year 7 or 8, the work is there simply as an 'extra' if you feel you would like to fill some of your time productively over the summer in support of your studies. It is not compulsory!

Year 9 into Year 10 GCSE Transition Work

Your transition from Lower to Upper School has begun!

Each of the Option Subject departments have created a transition booklet for their subjects. These activities will give you a taster of the topics you will cover in your new GCSE subjects from September. It would be great if you could attempt some of the activities provided for the subjects you have chosen to take at GCSE.

You can also find a link to the files on the homepage at www.jths.co.uk

Have a great summer break, we look forward to welcoming you back as Upper School students in September.

Year 10 Summer Work

The following resources have been created by a range of subjects to support the transition from year 10 into year 11. This type of work is shared every year, this has not been designed especially for this year because of the current situation. It would be useful for students to attempt to complete this work for the subjects that they study but it is not compulsory. Certain subjects have also set this and/or other work in Go4Schools in the usual manner.

Year 11 into 12 - Induction & Bridging work

Year 11 students can now access our Online Induction programme by clicking on www.jths.co.uk/sixth-form-induction-2020. Each student has been sent this link directly to their school e-mail account.

It is important that they listen to the welcome message from the Director of Post 16, Mrs Spencer, as this video includes information about how to get the most out of the online induction programme. Once they have done this, they will need to read the information on the home page and complete the short lesson from the Learning Resource Centre.

The next stage requires students to click on the sixth form menu and select Sixth Form Induction A Level/BTEC Subjects. Students should select the subjects that they hold an offer for and listen to the welcome message from the department, complete the online lesson, and review the summer bridging work.

The summer bridging work will need to be completed and submitted during their first lesson in September. If students are unsure about whether they will meet the entry requirements for a subject, or change their subject choices, we have advised them to wait until they have received their GCSE results, before completing this work. However, they will need to prioritise this work in order to complete it before their first lesson in September.

Although nothing can replace an Induction programme that is held on our school site, we hope that students will experience a flavour of what sixth form life is like by watching the videos and completing the activities that we have provided.
