Weekly Information - Thursday 16th September 2021
On Tuesday 21st of September, we will be providing the students with the opportunity to have their individual school photographs taken. These will be taken in the hall throughout the day. Students have been told by their form tutors about the schedule and will be guided to their allocated times by their teachers on the day.
We will not be conducting sibling or Year 11 and 13 Year Group photographs at this time. We hope to be able to do this later in the year.
Students will return home on Tuesday with full details about how to order the photographs. This is done directly with JSSP Photography. Orders are then sent into school to be distributed to students by their form tutors.
As some of you may be aware, we have a very special Memorial Garden at John Taylor High School. This garden was created in 2003 when two of our young people were tragically killed when the car they were travelling in was hit by a lorry. Since then it has become a memorial for two other students, also lost during their time with us.
Unfortunately, for various reasons - including several lockdowns - it has been rather neglected and has become very overgrown.
Because we feel that it is so important to have a space to remember members of our community, and that we can actively use, we are going to put together a team and renovate it. We are going to clear out the overgrowth, then replant with plants that promote wildlife and physical and well-being. We are also going to try and grow some fruit and veg. We are hoping that this will not only be a space that honours those we have lost, but that it will be a place that can be used with some of our students to get involved and find a sense of achievement, talk and use as a space for mental health and well-being. Students may also use the garden to remember those who they themselves have lost from their own families.
Once we have renovated the garden, we will then, of course, need to maintain it.
We have put together a team of staff and students, ranging from Year 7 to the Sixth Form, who have volunteered to give up their free time to renovate and restore the garden after schools and during breaks and lunchtimes. However, as I am sure you aware, this will incur costs for the materials and plants that we will need to create a fitting memorial.
For this reason, we are writing to you to ask if any of you have any contacts in the gardening business who may wish to donate, or have any contacts from any of the big companies in and around us who have a community outreach section and may wish to help us out, either with time, equipment or financial donations.
We have also going to set up an option to donate to our fund on ParentPay if any of you wish to do so. This is of course entirely optional.
If you can offer any help or support, please contact me via email at [email protected] .
I am so looking forward to keeping you updated on our progress via the Vision and Values section on our website and on twitter @johntaylorhighschool and @MrsBonTweets !
Thank you so much in advance,
Sally-Anne Bonnett (Vision and Values Co-ordinator/House Co-ordinator)
You will be aware that Netflix is hugely popular across all ages, but there have been concerns in relation to age ratings and the type of content that is recommended to viewers. Like many other services, Netflix uses algorithms to determine what you might like to watch based on viewing history, what you have previously liked etc.
Since last year, Netflix has been working with the BBFC and 100% of the content on Netflix is now age-rated to BBFC classification standards. It is the first UK streaming service to accomplish this.
The link below is a guide for parents on setting up a child account and how to choose maturity ratings.
A New Student's Point of View
Over the last two weeks we have had the pleasure of welcoming our new Y7 students who have made a fantastic impression.
Two of our students would like to share their transition so far.
"When I walked into John Taylor High School for the first time I was so nervous. Now with new friends and my amazing form tutor and teachers, every day I wake up excited to start a new day. My first class was design and technology and it was so enjoyable. We got to cut out then make a watermelon with the pieces we cut out. Although that was fun, I think my all time favourite subject is English. I like English because you have to be creative and think outside the box. You get to push yourself and believe in yourself.
Thank you for reading all about my first week at John Taylor High School."

"My first week of JT went well. It is hard at the time. We have all gone through this but this has been the best school week!!"

Well done to these students for sharing their experiences and to all of our Year 7 students for making such a positive start.

Dear Parent/Guardian of Students in Year 7 - Year 11
The Childhood Flu Vaccination Programme 2021-2022
THIS IS NOT THE COVID VACCINATION
This vaccination is recommended to help protect your child against flu. Flu can be an unpleasant illness and can cause serious complications. Vaccinating your child will also help protect more vulnerable family and friends by preventing the spread of flu. With COVID-19 still in circulation, it is important to reduce the number of those becoming ill with flu this winter to help protect them, the NHS and social care. Research also shows that if you become unwell with both flu and COVID-19 at the same time you may become seriously ill.
This vaccination is free and is a quick and simple spray up the nose. Even if your child had it last year, it is recommended to have the flu vaccine again this year. If your child has a long-term medical condition they can access this vaccine both at your GP surgery or in School. For those children that cannot have the nasal spray, the injected flu vaccine is recommended.
Some people may not accept the use of porcine gelatine in medical products. The nasal flu vaccination is considered the most appropriate vaccine, however if this is not suitable, there is an alternative injectable porcine free vaccine available this year. This will be an injection, rather than a nasal spray and may need to be given in a clinic setting, rather than school. If you would like your child to receive the alternative vaccination, please tick the relevant box on the consent page of the e-consent form.
For further information see:

Electronic Consent - The School Age Immunisation Team is moving towards paperless vaccination programmes and the use of e-Consent is quick and easy to use, and can be completed on any electronic device.
Click on this link https://forms.mpft.nhs.uk/ to complete the consent form.
Your school Code is SS136323
Please complete the e-consent form by 20/09/2021
The vaccination is due to take place in school Thursday 30th of September 2021. Children who do not receive the vaccination at school will be able to have it at one of our community clinics. Information on how to arrange this will be sent to you, following the school vaccination session.
Please ensure that you complete and submit your child’s consent form promptly, whether you wish your child to be immunised or not and only submit one consent form per child. If you have any concerns or would like to discuss further please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Immunisation Team on 03001240366 or email [email protected]
If your child has already received this immunisation via your GP Practice, please contact us at [email protected] or call 0300 124 0366 to advise.
If your child is asthmatic and there are any changes to their health 14 days before the vaccination date YOU MUST contact the immunisation team on 0300 124 0366 as your child may not be well enough to receive the vaccination. These include, if your child:
- Becomes wheezy
- Has required oral steroids
- Has increased their asthma medication
If you have any further questions or need more information, please contact the School Age Immunisation Team rather than the school on 0300 124 0366.
