A team of Business and Economics students competed in The Sixth Form Management Games, this is a regional competition in which schools across the country compete.
The day is run by The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accounting, and professionals from the organisation run the day setting the students up with real world scenarios in which they had to write reports and deliver presentations all judged by these professionals.
The scenario the students were given this year was how to cut costs from a hospital without compromising patient care, this meant making reasoned and rational decisions and justifying their choices, they also had to talk to MP’s and trade union representatives all whilst meeting strict deadlines. The students were all excellent throughout the day, working well as a team with each other and all handling the challenging questions from the professionals.
The John Taylor High School team won the competition and were praised very highly by the professionals for all elements of the tasks that they had to produce throughout the day and told that they had beaten all the other teams in every challenge.
On Saturday 10th June the County Schools Athletics Championships was held at Northwood Stadium, Stoke. It was a fantastic day of top class athletics, with many JTHS students, along with other students from the Burton schools district being selected to represent East Staffordshire.
The East Staffs team selections were made from the students who had performed successfully at the Schools District Competitions at Shobnall Leisure Complex.
The following students represented East Staffordshire in the following events:
- Beth Henstock - High Jump (3rd) and 800m
- Toby Poutney - 300m
- Sammy McCafferty - 300m (1st)
- Ruby Davies - 300m
- Rosie Tyler - 300m (2nd)
- Sam Knightsmith - High Jump
- George Kugelmann - Javelin (2nd) and Discus (2nd)
- Freddie Kugelmann - 400m (1st)
- Lewis Da Rosa - 100m (3rd) and Long Jump (1st)
- Katie Brant - 80m hurdles (1st)
- Amelie Ryder - Shot

Scrubbed-Up is a non-profit organisation that aims to both support prospective and current medical students from different ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds here in the UK.
Scrubbed-Up is holding a Virtual Open Day to provide access to a wide variety of medical schools. We understand that due to financial burdens, time restraints and huge costs associated with attending in-person open days, most students only have the opportunity to attend a handful at most.
This provides a significant barrier to entry, reduces individual’s options, and provides a limited insight into what medical school is like as well as what each medical school has to offer to its students.
With this event, we aim to remove these barriers and hindrances and provide access to an engaging and insightful virtual open day for Year 12 and 13 students from Widening Participation backgrounds.
The event will be held on 29th July from 10am to 1pm on Zoom.
A brief overview of the event is as follows:
- A quick introduction to the Scrubbed-Up Organisation
- Talk on the general application process including work experience, personal statement,
- expert talks on UCAT/BMAT process, expert talks on WP, and information about different interview styles such as MMI and panel
- Breakout rooms for the different universities (representatives from more than 20 medical schools)
- There will also be talks delivered in the main room for students to drop in between the
- breakout rooms
