Exceptional Achievement Award Celebration
22nd March 2024
We are delighted to have celebrated the Exceptional Achievement Award this morning for those students who have truly gone above and beyond. The initiative is led by Mrs Cochrane Headteacher at John Taylor High School and Mrs Rowe Headteacher at The Mosely Academy, and has been a huge success across the John Taylor Multi-Academy Trust.
This term students from Chase Terrace Academy, Needwood Primary School, All Saints Primary School Alrewas, John Taylor High School and Church Gresley Infant School got the opportunity to join together on a live stream for the celebration hosted by Mr Donoghue, JTMAT CEO.
Mr Donoghue began the celebration by welcoming the 15 nominated pupils and explained how out of 11,000 students across the trust, they were the ones to be chosen to receive this prestigious award for achieving truly extraordinary things. It was wonderful to hear each pupil’s story and left everyone feeling inspired by their commitment, ambition, tenacity and remarkable courage.
The categories for the nominations included; County, National or International status in any given activity, Success in overcoming adversity, Fundraising for a charity over £5000, Grade 1 at KS1 or Grade 3+ in music/singing at KS2 and Performing in a televised programme/film or National stage production. Nominations can be made by parents, carers, peers or teachers and go through a rigorous selection process to ensure all criteria are met. Mr Donoghue showed his appreciation to everyone who had made a nomination and sincerely thanked them for the support and guidance they give to the children.
Well done to JTHS pupils; Beatrice, Emily, Fleurella, Florence and Hannah for their outstanding performance in Equestrian, Cara for her exceptional Ice-skating achievements, and Amelia for her ambition in patisserie and national TV appearances. Well done to all of you. Mrs Cochrane was beaming with pride as she presented the pupils with their Certificate and Pin Badge.
Mr Donoghue said ‘It is important that only those who are truly deserving and meet the criteria receive The Exceptional Achievement Award. It is a pleasure to host the celebration and raises emotions and admiration for these young people who have proven to show their remarkable resilience, compassion and hard work. It is a real privilege working with children and young people – keep being amazing’.
Thank you to everyone involved in making the celebration a success and to our pupils across the trust who have received the award. If you would like to make a nomination for the next award ceremony – click here: John Taylor High School eNewsletter (jths.co.uk)
John Taylor High School are delighted that their excellent outcomes have been recognised by SSAT (The Schools, Students and Teachers Network) in this year’s Educational Outcomes Awards. The award recognises that John Taylor High School is among the highest performing secondary schools in the country, based on 2023 performance data and information from Ofsted.
John Taylor High School was recognised for being in the top 20% of non-selective schools nationally for student attainment in the 2023 end of KS4 exams.
The SSAT Educational Outcomes database compares all state-funded schools in England. To be recognised with an Educational Outcomes Award is a significant achievement and a testament to the work of the whole school community.
Sue Williamson, Chief Executive of SSAT said:
“Congratulations to John Taylor High School on winning an SSAT Educational Outcomes Award. This success is down to the superb learning and teaching, outstanding support and inspirational leadership of students, staff, parents and governors. You have made a huge difference to the lives of the young people in your school. Thank you.”
SSAT, the Schools, Students and Teachers network is a membership organisation of schools and academies. They have been working with leaders, teachers and students for over 30 years to drive school improvement and innovation and support their members through networking opportunities, professional development and school improvement programmes.

Earlier this term, Mr Simmons and Mr Twynham and myself had the privilege of awarding a number of Year 10-13s their DofE award.
Over the evening, we celebrated the success of 40 Bronze, 30 Silver and 6 Gold participants. Excitingly, the Gold students are now awaiting their invite to Buckingham Palace to officially collect their Gold badges!
As DofE Leader, I am immensely proud of all our DofE participants. I’m sure those who have received their award understand that DofE is more than just the expedition – more than just a weekend out in Peaks learning how to read a map. As a DofE cohort across the school, our students have spent over 2500 hours learning a new skill, taking part in a sport and volunteering for the community.
Our DofE students can be spotted helping at local parkruns, walking dogs at local animal shelters, and joining many Scouts and Brownies groups as inspirational leaders. Whilst many have continued a long-loved sport, several students have tried something new: snowboarding, archery and running, to name a few.
Our DofE students do have the memories of miles trekking through farm fields, dodging rain clouds, and hoping for a ‘well done’ from our expedition leader Rhydian but they’ve also proven that they can give their time and dedication to achieving a bigger goal. It was wonderful to see so many of you collecting your awards – well done!
Miss Platts.
On Thursday 21st March, Mr Williams welcomed teams of students from Kingsmead School, John Taylor Free School, and our own school team to take part in the very first JTMAT Robot Challenge 2024. The John Taylor High School team was made up of Amelie, Elisa, Ben and Jacob who were specially selected to take part in the inaugural challenge.
The full- day event included planning, programming and testing in the morning and then the final mission in the afternoon. The task was to programme robots to manoeuvre around the course in a figure of 8. At each colour tile the robots could earn bonus points for performing an optional function which the students had to programme. The teams could also earn bonus points for getting the robots to perform a 360 spin on the bridge, changing the colour of the robot and turning both headlights on.
Mr Williams said: ‘Thank you to all those involved, from providing equipment, to assisting on the day and creating the fantastic props! It was such a success, we can’t wait to plan our next event. Well done to Kingsmead School for taking the top spot, John Taylor High School in second place with only 2 seconds in it, and John Taylor Free School in third place. You should all be really proud of yourselves’.
The Robot Challenge was a great project for students to get involved in and further promotes STEM subjects. We hope the day has inspired the students to continue their passion and interest in STEM subjects.
On the 8th March 2024 the annual Year 7 residential took place with 130 students and 11 staff members heading to The Outward Bound Trust, Aberdyfi centre, in Mid-Wales for a weekend of action packed adventure in a safe, stimulating, and awe inspiring wild country.
Students were challenged to find “their version of success” in a range of activities from high intensity challenges such as the trapeze, abseiling or Jacob’s ladder as well as extended learning activities including gorge walking, canoeing, hiking, and scrambling. Students are challenged to persevere through the challenges when times get tough as well as supporting other members of their group showing the kindness and respect we hold dear to us at John Taylor High School.
Mr Simmons, trip leader, commented “the year 7 residential is a lovely opportunity for the school to take students outside of the classroom and to challenge them to be a better version of themselves. We have crafted the weekend over years to ensure that students develop a range of skills whilst they are away with us. We talk about how “every footstep in life is different” and for some students that step off the jetty jump may be a real challenge, for others it is the backwards step down the abseil wall or even the accuracy and delicate traverse required to navigate along the plank above the grot pot. We thoroughly enjoy seeing the students enjoying themselves, making new connections and doing things they may have never done before.”
The Year 7 residential builds upon learning from the Year 7 Bonding Day and sets foundations for further adventures and expeditions as students move to PGL in Year 8 or engage in the Duke of Edinburgh Award in Year 9 and beyond. The residential also affords the opportunity for students to make new connections with people across their year group and engage with different staff that may not yet teach them.
Miss Barker, Geography Teacher and Lead Teacher of STRIPE said, “The weekend is both active and enjoyable, but we also ensure that the learning is a two-way process having a direct impact back in the classroom. The students are challenged to think about and reflect upon the STRIPE skills they are developing through the activities. When the students can see the application of the STRIPE skills in the real world when completing the marble run, spider’s web, nightline and other team dynamics it aids them to see the value when approaching school-based learning too”.
Due to the nature of the residential, students are challenged to be independent throughout the trip. This involves life skills like making their own beds and cleaning their tables to the integrity required to co-habit with other students as well as protecting the site and environment from any negative impact whilst in Wales. All staff spoke very positively of the approach from the Year 7 students throughout the trip and wanted to say a big “well done” for their collective effort on their first residential visit with us at John Taylor High School.
Without the generosity of time from staff these trips can’t go ahead so a huge thank you must go to Mr Simmons, Ms Crutchley, Miss Barker, Miss Platts, Miss Archer, Ms Jones, Mr Williams, Miss Arif, Miss Davies, Miss Evans and Mr Crowther for voluntarily giving their weekend to lead the students through the residential.
John Taylor High School school celebrates completing leading national gender inclusion programme in computer science.
John Taylor High School has been recognised for their commitment to encouraging gender inclusion in computer science by the National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE).
The school has completed the national I Belong: encouraging girls into computer science programme, demonstrating a commitment to encouraging girls into computer science and improving the gender balance within the subject. The I Belong certificate is awarded by the NCCE, a leading body for computing education in England.
Mrs Bostock Computer Science Teacher said:'I am really proud to achieve this award as a female in the Computer Science world, which is traditionally a male donimated environment. It's been great to see so many females taking an interested in our topics and I hope to inspire and encourage them.'
John Taylor High School successfully completed all aspects of the programme to achieve the I Belong programme certificate. The evidence-informed programme signposts to a range of activities and approaches most likely to support girls’ engagement with the subject.
Katherine Ellis, Gender Inclusion Lead at the NCCE, said:
“Congratulations to John Taylor on this accomplishment! Schools play a crucial part in addressing the gender gap in computer science education and related careers. This school is among others leading the way in understanding the issue and creating change at a local level. This certificate recognises the efforts the school has gone to, to support and empower all students, especially girls, in choosing this path.”
Established in 2018 and funded by the Department for Education, the NCCE has been instrumental in advancing computing education across schools in England, providing professional development courses, resources, and guidance to enhance teaching and learning.
On Thursday 14th March we had the pleasure of welcoming our brilliant Sixth Form performers and staff to the stage to showcase their talents at the Sixth Form Show 2024.
The atmosphere was incredible throughout the evening, it was a wonderful to see the students so supportive of each other with lots of cheering and clapping. It was fantastic to see such a diverse range of performances which really kept the audience captivated.
John Taylor High School Sixth Form not only offers an exciting and stimulating curriculum, but there is also a plethora of activities to get involved in and a wide range of opportunities for the students to fulfil their potential. The wellbeing of the students is of paramount importance to the school and coming together as one community during an event of this nature only positively impacts the students in helping achieve their personal excellence. During the event, £385.50 was raised which has been donated to Mind, a charity that gives mental health support.
Mrs Spencer, Director of Studies Post 16, said ‘It is a pleasure to be part of this much-anticipated annual event and I am blown away each year at the talent we have in our Sixth Form. It was wonderful to see the amount of hard-work each student had put into their performance whilst still managing their day-to-day school life. Everyone should be incredibly proud of themselves. I would like to give a special thanks to Ben Carty for hosting the show and everyone involved behind the scenes.’

Following British Science Week last week, our pupils have continued the momentum with some fantastic Science activities this week.
Mrs Starbuck's Year 7s got the opportunity to build their own rubber band powered vehicle using everyday materials.
The session was live streamed to the students by The Smallpeice Trust who went through each stage step by step. The Year 7s listened carefully and it was great to see their creations coming to life ready to be raced. The Smallpeice Trust are passionate about creating opportunities and want to fuel young people's passion for STEM subjects. Find out more here about The Smallpeice Trust: About us | Smallpeice Trust
One student said: 'I've enjoyed this project so much. It's great to have a mix of practical lessons and doing something a little different to our usual lessons.' Well done everyone for their efforts!

‘No act of kindness, no matter how small is ever wasted’ - Aesop
Kindness has been a key theme that Mr Forden has interwoven throughout assemblies, form time activities and now the Year 10 Celebration Event for the Spring Term.
Each form tutor in Year 10 was asked to nominate two students for demonstrating kindness this term; tutors were asked to provide specific reasons and students arrived in the canteen on Wednesday morning to receive a personal envelope. This envelope contained their tutor’s lovely words to reflect each nomination, we do hope parents have seen these personalised notes too.
Well done to these students:
J - Molly & Evie
T - Harrison & Manon
A - Zara & Ethan
Y - Ella & Jaron
L - Riley & Evie
O - Ava & Oli
R - Corey & Honey
H - Tilly & Leandro
S - Maja & George.
Our fabulous canteen staff prepared a range of breakfast items for the students to dive into. It was fantastic to be able to spend time with students to celebrate.
Congratulations to all students who were nominated and thank you from the Upper School Team for your commitment to our school values.
Well done to all the students who participated magnificently in the competition yesterday and have worked incredibly hard over the last few months preparing for their roles. Unfortunately we did not win the heat this year but we certainly can say we put in a performance we could be proud of.

Can I thank Mrs Budge for her support and Mr Howell for much needed IT help during the morning.
Thank you, Mrs Nurse.
Well done to Mrs Findon’s Year 7 class for producing some outstanding work as part of the their ‘Sustainable City’ topic. The students were tasked with to creating a plan, PowerPoint or a model of a sustainable city this half term. The students have been studying the opportunities and challenges in cities before looking at what is ‘sustainability’ and how cities can be made sustainable. They also researched jobs related to the topic and created group discussions about jobs such as nuclear engineers, eco consultants and town planning. Next the students will be studying ‘the future of UK energy and whether wind or nuclear energy are the way forward. Well done everyone for the hard-work and enthusiasm that went into this project.
16 Dancers from JTHS performed at The Lichfield Garrick Theatre on Monday night. The group was made up of students from Year 7 to Year 9. The show was the SSPA Gotta Sing, Gotta Dance showcase that included local dance companies and school dance groups. The JTHS Dance group performed a jazz commercial piece to the song “A little party never killed nobody” that was made famous through The Great Gatsby film. Students have choreographed the dance in their after-school club, alongside working towards this dance, pupils hold regular dance workshops for local primary schools and perform at the JTHS concerts throughout the academic year. The girls were fantastic and had the crowd clapping along. Lots of the pupil have never danced on stage before their performance at the Lichfield Garrick. They manged to beat the nerves and put on a crowd-pleasing performance. A big well done to all those who performed, Miss Senior and Mrs O'Brien was super proud of you all.
It has been a good season for our Year 7 Netball team. We have played a number of fixtures and finished on a tournament at Deferrers high school playing 6 games in total, placing 4th overall. Over this past season, the girls have developed so much and really grown in confidence which has been down to their perseverance and commitment to training. We have had extra training after school on a Friday and this group of students have turned up each week with bundles of enthusiasm! Well done girls.....until next year!
Mrs Roberts.
It was a delight to visit our local residents in Palmer Close this morning as our Young Sporting Ambassadors delivered Easter chocolate and a variety of goodies to their doorsteps.
The goodies included chocolate, Easter cards written by the Young Sporting Ambassadors and a beautiful pin broche crafted by students in the Art Club. The community outreach initiative is run by Mrs Berry who works hard to put on these events, with the help of the Young Sporting Ambassadors.
It was lovely to see the Young Sporting Ambassadors speaking with the residents who were really grateful for their cards and gifts. Nothing epitomises our One Community ethos and core value of kindness more than a project like this. Thank you to all those involved!
On the 6th & 20th March, we welcomed a group of Year 5 & 6 students from local primary schools to join us for our Football Festival & Hi 5 Netball Event.
The sessions, led by our Sports Leaders and Young Sporting Ambassadors, started with a warm up and some practice sessions which the primary pupils really enjoyed. It was great to see so much enthusiasm in the build up at both the Football Festival & Hi 5 Netball Match.
During the games, the level of skill and team-spirit from the primary pupils was phenomenal throughout. It was great to hear them talking about tactics and supporting each other.
It was the responsibility of our Sports Leaders to lead the warm-ups, organise the heats, keep track of the scores, and award the winning team with a trophy and certificates. Our Sports Leaders really wanted to make the event a memorable experience for the primary pupils and inspire them to continue their passion for playing sport.
Well done to all those involved!
Written by Freya, Year 11.
On Wednesday 6th March a few people from Year 11 were selected to go to Warwick University and spend the day learning about the University and life there. In the morning we had a talk from someone from the recruitment team as well as some students studying at the University who told us about their experiences whilst studying there. There are many societies that people are able to join so people with similar hobbies and interests are able to meet eachother like the cricket society, badminton society and the salsa society. There are also many facilities such as a rock climbing wall and olympic size swimming pool that are available to all students. On Wednesdays they have food trucks come and students are able purchase items from them.
We then were taken on a tour of the university and were shown the biggest lecture hall there which holds 500 people! We where also shown the arts centre which is newly built and very impressive, students are able to put shows on and there are 3 cinemas.
At the end of the day we went to a design activity, at first we didn't know what to expect however we were given boxes with craft supplies and a brief to design a nature navigation.
Overall, we had a great day and learnt a lot about University and life there!
Wellbeing Award update
Parents, we need your help! We are in the final stretch of gaining accreditation for the wellbeing award at JTHS. We have had lots of activities happening at JTHS to help raise awareness of mental health and the importance of wellbeing, from tea and talks, assemblies, guest speaker, exam stress busting workshops and confidence boosting boxing sessions for both staff and students.
Student Support and the SEN department have been working closely with students to help support positive wellbeing and Mrs Appleton and Mrs Heathcote and the pastoral teams have continued their hard work in supporting students from KS3 to KS5. If you would like advice or guidance on children’s or parental Wellbeing there are links on the school website to external support agencies and articles of support.
As part of the Wellbeing Award for Schools parental feedback is important. Like the previous survey’s the final parental survey allows you to share your thoughts on how JTHS has supported wellbeing. Please can you complete the survey to help us inform our final decisions on what we have done well and areas that we will continue to endeavour to improve on at JTHS. The deadline for completion is Friday 19th April.

Thank you.
Dear Parents/Carers of Year 7,
You may or may not be aware that I am expecting a baby very soon. I will be finishing at Easter, so I wanted to take the opportunity to say what a pleasure it has been being Head of Year to this year group so far and wish them all the very best for the next academic year. I plan to return to the role and will look forward to seeing the progress the students make in my absence.
In the meantime, Miss Archer will be my replacement so please contact her regarding any concerns, you also have Form Tutors as your first port of call and our Lower School Pastoral Support Mrs Gilmore.
Wishing you a lovely Easter break!
Miss Sears
Following Easter, we will be carrying out uniform checks during registration. Please can we ask for parents/carers support in continuing to ensure our students arrive at school in the correct uniform.
You can view the school uniform policy and guidance here:
Policies and Procedures - John Taylor High School (jths.co.uk)
At school we can support with short term, daily loans of some items such as ties, shoes and blazers. However, these stocks are limited, therefore it would be helpful if the Easter break was used as an opportunity to replace any uniform required for the summer term.
Year 11 continues to require full uniform across the summer term, and it is required for GCSE exams.
As we hopefully move to warmer weather during the summer term, the school may communicate temporary changes to the uniform expectation around blazers and ties. Unless this is communicated, please assume that uniform should be worn to meet the policy and guidance.
We want to inform all parents/carers that there is a planned price increase on School Meals to £2.95, which will take effect from the summer term, Monday 8th April.
Here are our menus and new prices:Canteen Information - John Taylor High School (jths.co.uk)
We thank you for continued support and endeavour to provide healthy and nutritious options for all pupils at all our eating outlets.
MMR vaccination
All school age children should have received 2 MMR vaccinations as babies/toddlers. For those who have had none or only one, there will be clinics running at the Burton Fire Station on Saturday 13th April 10am- 2pm and on Thursday 18th April 3pm-6pm. These are walk in sessions (no appointment needed) for MMR vaccination only. If you are not sure if your child has had both doses, feel free to come along and we can check for you. Pork free vaccine will be available if required. For further information, please feel free to contact; [email protected]
You may have seen reports in the media around fines for parents choosing to take their children on term time holidays. This is actually linked to any unauthorised request for leave of absence. We felt it may be useful to clarify both this as well as the position of all schools in John Taylor MAT.
At John Taylor MAT, all schools are required to follow a common Pupil Attendance and Punctuality Policy in order to ensure fairness and consistency. With regards to legal intervention, all schools are expected to follow current local authority ‘Penalty Notice Codes of Conduct’ and thresholds for issuing penalty notice fines. For term time holidays, the Staffordshire County Council threshold for these fines is from 1 day or more. The full policy can be found in the policies and procedures section of the school website.
A new ‘national framework for penalty notices’ will be introduced from 19th August 2024 as detailed in the recent update to the DfE’s ‘Working together to improve attendance’ guidance. This has been reported in the media but will not become active until next academic year, 2024-25.
Dear Parent/Carer,
I am delighted to inform you that John Taylor High School has signed up for a new initiative to support families and schools called Six4Schools introduced by the Birmingham Bears.
What is Six4Schools?
Six4Schools is an initiative by Birmingham Bears which offers adult tickets starting at £13 (normally £25) for their T20 matches this summer when using a discount code unique to the school. U5s are always free and 5-15 year olds £5.
Our school will benefit because for every adult ticket sold, the school will receive £6 back. As an example, if we sell 200 adult tickets, we will receive £1200! This is meant to be used to reinvest in the education of the pupils (for e.g., for: computer equipment, playground equipment, or cricket coaching sessions).
It’s a great opportunity for the school and hopefully a chance for you to enjoy the incredible T20 atmosphere at Edgbaston this summer.
To purchase your tickets, follow the instructions below:
1. visit: Tickets.Edgbaston.com
2. At the top of the page enter this promotional code: JTHS24
3. Select the Birmingham Bears fixture you would like to attend this summer (please note the discount only applies to Saturday 8 June and Sunday 14 July fixtures). If you did not enter the promotional code before this can also be done here on the right-hand side of the page.
4. Select the stand in which you would like to purchase your tickets. U16s must be accompanied by an adult and for every 1 adult ticket sold, 5 U16 tickets may be selected.
5. Make your payment using your credit/debit card
You will receive your tickets via email.
It would be fantastic to see as many parents as possible take advantage of this offer to head to Edgbaston this summer to watch some exciting cricket and in the process help us win the interactive board!
Yours Sincerely,
Miss Dean

Leading Education runs a free programme every year to support Year 12s entering the application process for top UK universities. We have supported over 2000 students with this programme over the last 2 years that we have run it, with overwhelmingly positive feedback from our students. The free programme this year begins with a lecture on March 25th.
I have attached the flyer again here for reference. If this link does not work, do let me know and I can send over the PDF version. If you could distribute it to relevant students to sign up, we would greatly appreciate it.
In addition to the free programme, we will also be launching our free access programme for students from underrepresented backgrounds at university in order to access this continuous support through the application process. Students can register for this through signing up for the free programme via the flyer.
For you to also have a better idea of what students think of the support we offer, I wanted to share with you one of the reviews we received last year for a student applying to Law at Cambridge:
"Taking part in the Leading Education Programme proved to be an invaluable resource in the process of applying to university. Would I recommend this programme? Without hesitation. I have no doubt in my mind that every A-Level student navigating the complexities of university applications needs an extra hand with organising and developing the skills needed for a successful application. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone aspiring to reach their full potential in higher education and beyond."
