Hot Chocolate with the Head 03/05/24
Today Mrs Cochrane was joined by a group of deserving students to celebrate their achievements in the recent Virtual Mock Magistrates Competition. Joined by Mrs Nurse, who led the project, the students enjoyed sharing their story over a hot chocolate!
The group began by describing the case they had to investigate and how they were assigned different roles in the virtual courthouse. The event was marked by KC Barristers and Law Professors from different institutions. Each student had to think on their feet and make rationalised decisions whilst competing against other schools.
Here are the roles that the team took on:
Prosecution Team
Prosecution Lawyer 1 Jeff (Y8)
Prosecution Lawyer 2 Jake (Y9)
Prosecution Witness 1 Nancy (Y8)
Prosecution Witness 2 Rebekah (Y7)
Legal Adviser Enfys (Y8)
Defence Team
Defence Lawyer 1 Alexander (Y8)
Defence Lawyer 2 Amelia (Y8)
Defendant Alys (Y8)
Defence Witness Amelie (Y7)
Usher Harry (Y7)
Bench
Magistrate 1 Emilia (y8)
Magistrate 2 Mia-Ann (Y8)
Magistrate 3 Lillie Mae (Y8)
Mrs Nurse said ‘Well done to all the students who participated magnificently in the competition and have worked incredibly hard over the last few months preparing for their roles. Unfortunately we did not win the heat this year but we certainly can say we put in a performance we could be proud of. It was one of the most challenging cases I have worked on so the students did superbly, especially with the additional challenge of it being virtual.’
Mrs Cochrane was delighted to hear how well the students had represented the school and performed in the competition. The students had put in a lot of time and preparation which shows their dedication and perseverance, which are important values to us as school for our pupils to demonstrate.
At the end of the celebration, Mrs Cochrane presented each student with a certificate that they should be very proud of. Well done to all those involved!
We had the pleasure of spending this morning’s PD session with Year 11 at their ‘Good Luck’ Assembly before they begin their GCSE’s next week. Spirits were high as pupils got the opportunity to sign each other’s shirts, whilst staff were on-hand to offer advice and tips for the upcoming exam period.
Over the last few months, all Year 11 students have been involved in our Supporting Success programme which has included assemblies, external speakers and managing their well-being. To continue the Supporting Success programme the school has successfully implemented a series of upcoming pre-exam briefings with a bespoke timetable for our Y11 cohort, which all parents and students have been made aware of. The pre-exam briefings will give the students access to highly qualified subject specialist teachers throughout the exam period to ensure they have the best possible chance of succeeding. The pre-exam timetable will commence from Thursday 9th May until Wednesday 19th June.
Mr Thompson, Head of Year 11, led today’s ‘Good Luck’ assembly and thanked them for all their efforts and positive attitudes as they enter their GCSE’s. During Mr Thompson’s talk he said ‘the past is in the past, the future is in the future, all you need to do at this point is concentrate on the present. It’s never too late to do a little bit extra to help achieve the results you want and be the best you can be’, which left all the student’s feeling inspired.
Mr Thompson finished by reminding the students of the upcoming Celebration Assembly that will take place on June 20th 2024 and more information will be shared soon. We wish each Year 11 student the best of luck in their exams and the next step in their education or careers.

Mrs Ball, Subject Leader of CEIAG.
The RAF is holding its next Virtual World event on the 8 May 2024. The theme is Engineering and your students aged 16+ are invited to join us online to find out more about the RAF, our mission, our people, and the roles we offer. There is no cost to attending and parents are encouraged to join.
The link for the event is here: RAF World: Engineer Your Career Tickets, Wed 8 May 2024 at 19:30 | Eventbrite. Supporting flyers are at Tile 1 and 2.
Dear Parent/Carer,
I am delighted to inform you that John Taylor High School has signed up for a new initiative to support families and schools called Six4Schools introduced by the Birmingham Bears.
What is Six4Schools?
Six4Schools is an initiative by Birmingham Bears which offers adult tickets starting at £13 (normally £25) for their T20 matches this summer when using a discount code unique to the school. U5s are always free and 5-15 year olds £5.
Our school will benefit because for every adult ticket sold, the school will receive £6 back. As an example, if we sell 200 adult tickets, we will receive £1200! This is meant to be used to reinvest in the education of the pupils (for e.g., for: computer equipment, playground equipment, or cricket coaching sessions).
It’s a great opportunity for the school and hopefully a chance for you to enjoy the incredible T20 atmosphere at Edgbaston this summer.
To purchase your tickets, follow the instructions below:
1. visit: Tickets.Edgbaston.com
2. At the top of the page enter this promotional code: JTHS24
3. Select the Birmingham Bears fixture you would like to attend this summer (please note the discount only applies to Saturday 8 June and Sunday 14 July fixtures). If you did not enter the promotional code before this can also be done here on the right-hand side of the page.
4. Select the stand in which you would like to purchase your tickets. U16s must be accompanied by an adult and for every 1 adult ticket sold, 5 U16 tickets may be selected.
5. Make your payment using your credit/debit card
You will receive your tickets via email.
It would be fantastic to see as many parents as possible take advantage of this offer to head to Edgbaston this summer to watch some exciting cricket and in the process help us win the interactive board!
Yours Sincerely,
Miss Dean
