Every week at John Taylor, Mr Blanchenot takes the time to recognise students who have gone above and beyond and positively contributed to our school community.
Hot Chocolate with the Head is a great chance to come together and celebrate not just individual achievements, but the values that make our community strong, such as kindness, respect, integrity and perseverance. Nominated students are great role models for their peers, demonstrating what it means to support one another and work hard. It’s great to learn of their achievements and enjoy some delicious hot chocolate!
This week, Mr Blanchenot was thrilled to welcome Charlotte in Year 7.
Charlotte had been nominated by Miss Sawojka for kindness in selflessly helping her other classmates in Geography. Her willingness to share resources and provide support has not only made her a valuable member of the class but has also created a positive and collaborative learning environment for everyone. This nomination highlights the importance of kindness and how one person’s actions can inspire others to be more supportive and caring in their own interactions.
Well done Charlotte!
On Thursday 6th January Mrs Berry and our JTHS Dance Ambassadors were excited to be holding their second Dance Workshop of the term for a group of Year 1 Primary School pupils from Thomas Russell Infant School.
The workshop began with the Dance Ambassadors performing the routine which they have been learning and preparing for several weeks. The JTHS Dance Ambassadors were fantastic leaders and showed kindness, respect and perseverance towards the primary pupils as they learnt new dance techniques and new routines.
As the workshop progressed, so did the primary pupil’s confidence. It was great to see them expressing themselves through movement and showing great enthusiasm for the dance routine. The aim of the workshop was not only to improve dance skills but to promote an active lifestyle and staying healthy.
The JTHS Dance Ambassadors created a supportive environment and encouraged the primary pupils to step out of their comfort zones to try something new. Teamwork, collaboration and communication were a few of the skills that the JTHS Dance Ambassadors promoted throughout the workshop.
To finish, the group performed their routines. The level of dance skill and technique was a pleasure to watch. There was a real sense of accomplishment from both secondary & primary pupils and it was a joy to see the interactions between the groups.
Again, this event is the pinnacle of our school’s vision; one community, striving for personal excellence. Thank you to everyone involved.

We would love for our pupils to get involved in the LGBT+ History Month Poetry Competition, in conjunction with 'School's OUT' education charity.
Poets amplify underrepresented voices, and many poets use their work to expose injustices and advocate for human rights. This is one of the reasons Schools OUT appointed a LGBT+ History Month poet laureate – award winning Adam Lowe, who will be one of the judges on the panel for this competition.

If you have any spare PE kit that you have grown out of, we kindly ask you to donate it to the PE Department.
We are looking for; both short and long-sleeved tops, shorts, skorts, PE leggings, long socks, shin pads, football boots, and trainers.
Your donations will help other students who may not have the necessary gear for physical education classes.
Please ensure that all items are clean before handing them in to a member of the PE Department. Thank you for supporting our school community!
- Appointment times will remain at 5 minutes to allow each member of staff to have a sufficient number of slots throughout the evening.
- The booking system will be set up to enforce a minimum travel time between appointments, therefore reducing the risk of arriving late when moving between locations.
- The automated booking function will be disabled to allow parents to book appointments manually and plan their evening based on the location of teachers.
- Centralised venues will be used to reduce travel time around the school site.
On Tuesday 4th February, ten Year 9 students were selected to take part in the UK Olympiad Linguistics Competition, where they faced a thrilling test of their language skills and perseverance. The students have been working towards the competition throughout the spring term and have given up their lunch time to practise. Selected for their aptitude in linguistics, the team engaged in a series of challenging language-based tasks.
The languages included Fur (spoken in Darfur), Saisiyat (an indigenous language spoken in North-West Taiwan), Icelandic and Armenian.
The tasks required more than just knowledge; they encouraged critical thinking and collaboration. As they competed against other schools, each member of the team brought their own insight, helping to tackle decoding unfamiliar languages and solving complex tasks.
Working closely together, the students used their problem-solving skills and learn to identify patterns within languages. Each challenge not only tested their abilities but also strengthened their teamwork, resilience and collaboration. Participating in the Olympiad is not just about winning; it’s about growing as learners and developing a passion for languages.
Well done to every one of you, Mrs Smoker will be submitting the entries and will eagerly await the results!

This week in our pupils PD session, students had the opportunity to watch an online presentation delivered by Sam Gates, from the Monetary Policy expectations team and Katie Lorimer, from the Prudential Regulation Authority team at The Bank of England.

This engaging session provided valuable insights into the world of financial services. Mrs. Ball, our careers lead, praised the presentation as excellent, stating that it was both informative and interesting. Both Sam and Katie successfully captured the attention of our pupils as they learnt more about the different roles and responsibilities within The Bank of England.
During the presentation, Sam and Katie discussed various topics, including their roles at the Bank of England, the functioning of financial markets, and the impact of innovation on the economy. They also explained important concepts such as interest rates and the impact of the vault that stores approximately £200 billion worth of gold. Furthermore, they highlighted the different career paths available within the Bank of England, giving students a glimpse into potential future opportunities in the financial sector.
The session was a fantastic chance for students interested in a career in finance to gain insight into this industry. They were fully engaged throughout the presentation and asked thoughtful questions, showing their curiosity and eagerness to learn. This experience not only broadened their understanding of financial services but also inspired them to explore various career options within the economy. Overall, it was an amazing opportunity that enriched our students' knowledge and sparked their interest in the financial world.
Dear Parents/Carers,
I am writing to inform you that the toilet facilities in the Link Block will be closed on Monday 10th & Tuesday 11th February to all students. Essential works are scheduled to take place. All pupils have been made aware of this and will be directed to use alternate facilities located across the school.
Unfortunately, this decision comes after some damage has been caused by some of our students and it is disheartening to see financial resources diverted from other school needs due to the actions of a few individuals. To ensure that pupils use school facilities appropriately and prevent this type of closure, we would appreciate it if parents and carers could discuss the expectations for behaving with respect for our facilities with their children.
John Taylor High School is committed to providing clean and functional toilet facilities for all pupils, an issue which was also raised in the recent MAT survey that was completed by staff, students and parents. We continue to expect all students to take responsibility for their environment and encourage parents to have this discussion with their children. By treating school facilities with respect, we can ensure that funds are available for important educational resources and equipment. We have also explained to students that if they are found to have damaged any school facilities or resources that we will follow our behaviour procedures and significant sanctions may be issued.
We look forward to seeing the new facilities as we continue to promote hygiene and cleanliness and commit to the well-being of our pupils.
Yours sincerely,
Mr J Blanchenot
Safer Internet Day, celebrated on 11th February, is a national event aimed at promoting a safer and more responsible use of the internet, especially among young people. It also highlights the importance of respecting others online and being aware of cyberbullying.
During tutor time and assembly, pupils will be delivered presentations and resources will be shared to create discussion on particular topics.
Please read the top tips on the link below which can help students learn how to protect themselves and their peers while enjoying the many benefits that the internet offers. Are you a former pupil of John Taylor High School? If so, we'd love to hear from you!
As a school we pride ourselves upon our 'One Community' vision and ensure that our pupils have the best possible learning experience during their time with us so they can choose a pathway where personal excellence is achieved Post-16 and Post-18.
We are extremely proud of the achievements of our past students and many underestimate the impact that they can have when they return to speak with our current students to share their experiences with them. Many former pupils have progressed to prestigious universities, completed incredible apprenticeships and pursued diverse professions which not only do we love hearing about, but our current pupils love hearing about too! It gives them the inspiration to think, 'if they can do it, so can I'.
Over the years we have welcomed back former students to give talks to KS4 & KS5. We've been delighted to hear from journalists, doctors, teachers, pharmacists, law students, finance directors, communications specialists and many more, who shared their pathway with our current pupils in assemblies, workshops and at careers days.
Our ongoing outreach with Alumni is very important to us as part of our Careers provision at John Taylor High School. If you think you would like to part of inspiring the next generation and re-engaging with the school please contact us. We have a number of opportunities for you to become involved in.
Please email [email protected] or connect with @careersjths on X if you would like to support a school event or deliver an assembly or workshop to our students. Alternatively, if you would simply like to send us a written summary of your career pathway, we would love to hear from you too.
Thank you for your support! Take a look below at some images of our most recent Alumni who we have welcomed back and events you could get involved in!
