All - Government Data Allowance Scheme to Support Children Studying Remotely

Dear Parents,

You may have heard on the news that the government has offered a scheme that temporarily increases data allowances for mobile phone users on certain networks. This is so that children and young people can access remote education if their face-to-face education is disrupted as is currently the case during the national restrictions.

Who can get help

As a school we are able to apply for increased data allowances for children and young people who:

  • do not have fixed broadband at home
  • cannot afford additional data for their devices
  • are experiencing disruption to their face-to-face education

Children with access to a mobile phone on one of the following networks might be able to benefit:

  • Three
  • Smarty
  • Virgin Mobile
  • EE
  • Tesco Mobile
  • Sky Mobile

Other providers may join the scheme at a later stage.

How to request a mobile data increase

We have to submit a request centrally as a school. If you wish for us to apply for your child please can you complete the following online form by WEDNESDAY 13th JANUARY:

TEMPORARY DATA INCREASE SCHEME FORM

Following the deadline we will collate and submit the requests and each mobile provider will vary in how quickly they process requests.

Once a network provider has processed a data increase, they’ll send a text message to the account holder.

We hope this scheme will help you support your child during this time, but as always if your child is having any issues accessing the remote learning please contact the relevant Head of Year in the first instance.

Kind regards,

The Senior Leadership Team

All - Academic Mentors: English and Maths

This term John Taylor High School welcomed 2 new members of staff, Mrs N. Nazir and Mr J. Matthews, as Academic Mentors for English and Maths for the rest of the school year. Following the first national lockdown last year the government made funds available to schools to support both ongoing pupil progress and the catch-up of subject matter lost during this first period of school closure. At John Taylor we chose to use some of these funds to appoint the English and Maths Academic Mentors. They will support these core departments, working across all lower and upper school year groups with small groups of pupils to help their progress in English and Maths.

Students will be identified by their class teachers and will work on material prepared by the Academic Mentors in conjunction with their departmental colleagues in small group tuition during lessons. As we find ourselves back in a 2nd period of school closure their appointment is timely and will help us as we seek to further support students during this time. During remote teaching this support may be in the form of utilising the new “Breakout” room feature of Teams during lessons to support small groups of pupils or additional remote support materials will be produced and targeted at key pupils who will be further monitored. Parents will be informed about any Academic Mentor interventions that take place via details being logged on Go4Schools and it is hoped these additions to our teaching support staff will help give us capacity to offer assistance to more of our students than ever before.

We hope you will agree this is a valuable initiative and exciting opportunity for the JTHS community.

Kind regards,

Mr Curzon (Director of Numeracy) and Mrs Burns (CAL English)

Y11 - Morning Registration Subject Mentoring in English and Maths

Dear Parents,

Prior to Christmas we notified via email/letter the parents of selected Year 11 students who had been allocated to Subject Mentoring in English and/or Maths. These sessions were to take place during set AM registration periods in the new year.

These sessions will now start remotely next week, delivered via Teams. Those pupils previously identified will be sent a Teams invite by the member of staff allocated to deliver their session and will go to that, instead of the remote morning registration during that day of the week. The first round of English/Maths Subject Mentoring for Year 11 will run from next week up until half term.

Due to capacity we plan to offer further sessions to other pupils after this initial round ends at half term, and pupils will be selected again based on all available data closer to the time.

Kind regards,

Mr Curzon (Director of Numeracy) and Mrs Burns (CAL English)
